You would have thought, with a $200 million film, that they could have afforded better graphics. The action of the movie begins when Mariner arrives at an atoll to trade for. The only other thing that bothered me, besides the final battle scene, is the crappy computer graphics. Don't get me wrong: I think Waterworld rocks, but there was barely any story. Waterworld is a 1995 American post-apocalyptic action film directed by Kevin Reynolds and co-written by Peter Rader and David Twohy. It was based on Rader's original 1986 screenplay and stars Kevin Costner, who also produced it with Charles Gordon and John Davis. It deals with what would happen if the ice caps melted (although the world wouldn't be covered by that much water) but in terms of plot, there was barely anything.
Her only hope is the one called Mariner, a mutated human that can breathe under water. The survivors are desperate the group called the Smokers, which have guns and airplanes, go to all extent to find the girl that holds the secret to dry land. Corrected entry: If there were enough ice on the planet that, when melted, would raise the ocean levels to the extent shown in the movie, then the saltwater would be diluted enough to be drinkable, negating the plot point about 'hydro' being such a valuable commodity. The stories of land are but a myth, only a map inscribed on a girl's back proves otherwise. The world is covered by water and mankind has no recollections of their past. For Costner, Waterworld offered an opportunity to try his hand at a genre unlike any he had previously encountered.

The Waterworld movie production was the first to build full size sets and film them almost entirely while floating in an uncontrolled environment. In the end of the movie, they find Dryland, which turns out to be the peak of Mount Everest, still above sea level.
Those who survived have adapted to a new way of living. Many movies have been made about and on the sea.
